Helpful Handout for Colleagues and Families

Helpful Handout for Colleagues and Families

September 26, 2018

Speech and Language therapy provides support for so many different things, making it difficult for many people to understand what we do. With school age children, the most popular areas of need for therapy involve speech production, pragmatics, receptive, and expressive language. After working and speaking with many educators and families, I have compiled a helpful handout that outlines some… Read More

Need a fun (and “speechy”) activity for summer?! Look no further than BUBBLES! Bubble activities are exciting for children of all ages and can be a useful tool for therapy. I Am Lucky!

November 3, 2017

Happy November! The leaves are falling, the wind is picking up, and pumpkin spice is EVERYWHERE. There is something about the Northeast cool down that makes us come together and reflect on what we are thankful for. Gratitude is one of the more difficult concepts to teach children. Being appreciative as well as sensitive to other’s feelings are important life skills… Read More

Blocks are great for playing with independently an Blocks are great for playing with independently and together. With just a few blocks and some imagination language can flourish. I am a big fan of magnetic blocks with little kiddos because of their ability to stay together. Today these 5 blocks gave us an opportunity expand utterances and practice a variety of vocabulary concepts for an entire session! This one creation started out at a tower. That led to imagining it was part of a sand castle. From there we talked about how to make the castle with ocean water and sand, what we would wear at the beach, and what else we could do there. Suddenly, in true 3 year old fashion, it turned in to a spaceship! We counted down to blast off and described how it went up, up, up quickly to outerspace! Last, it magically turned in to a birthday candle! Suddenly we were singing, "Happy Birthday to You," making a wish, and blowing out the candle.

It is amazing how just a few crayons and paper may It is amazing how just a few crayons and paper may be all you need to get your kiddos talking and practicing their speech targets. While we may have lesson ideas in mind, it is important to take our student's lead to keep them motivated. So, what do you do when you are working with a child who loves drawing monsters? You draw monsters!

How can you target some categorization? Brainstorm some categories and turn those items in to monsters. Today we talked about different foods we like to eat. We listed apple, pear, pickle, and banana and got to drawing. Since this guy is younger he asked me to draw the heads to look like the fruit. Since I was drawing, I had him give me specific directions, i.e. circle eyes, rectangle body, sharp claws, etc. We took turns coloring in sections of the monster to get some fine motor practice. What a fun way to set up a feeding therapy session?! Have some of these actual foods ready to explore after you draw.

What type of monster would your child like to draw?

A fun and easy therapy craft you can do online or A fun and easy therapy craft you can do online or in person.
Black voices are deserving of a platform all year Black voices are deserving of a platform all year long. February is an opportunity to continue highlighting Black culture and history. Sharing the stories of Civil Rights pioneers is one way we can raise awareness and learn from them.

In 1960, Ruby Bridges helped open the door to an integrated school system in the South. She was a pioneer at the age of 6. It's mind blowing to think that a child so young could move mountains. It is also incredibly eye opening to note that she is 66 years old today! This is not ancient history.

Her bravery and strength during such a difficult time in history and in her immediate world is what we hope we can instill in our students as they face their own challenges today and in the future.

There are a number of great picture books available to read in person and online. Using this rich content, it is easy to support your student's therapy goals. You can address curriculum based vocabulary including difference, fair, laws, separate, and brave. Students can practice recalling information as you read chunks of text aloud. The images in these books provide opportunities for students to work on their descriptive vocabulary and make inferences. The infamous Norman Rockwell painting evokes strong emotions for those in the picture and the viewer. Using sentence prompts like, "This makes me feel _____ because _____," allows children to process emotions and develop a supported opinion.

I would love to hear how you highlight Black history in your speech room.

Salt Dough Fun! We all know how great play doh is Salt Dough Fun! We all know how great play doh is for fine motor development and as a tool for speech therapy but sometimes you open that container and it is hard as a rock or all the colors have merged in to one brown ball. Making play doh is fun but can take time and a stovetop.

Salt dough has only 3 ingredients and can be made on the spot without any heat. It is a great activity for sequencing and following directions and can even be done via teletherapy. A small batch of Salt Dough can be made with 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 1 cup of water. Mix then knead until you get a desired dough consistency. If it is too wet add a little flour. If it too dry add a little water. In a matter of moments you have a fun manipulative to play with.

Grab some fun cookie cutters to target your desired speech goals and get started! An added bonus is that Salt Dough can be baked. Your student can bake their favorite creation and decorate it once cooled, a great follow up activity.
